Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a occupational activity program, and identify the effects of occupational activity program for increasing hand function and occupational performance ability on mentally retarded adults. The subjects were 20 mentally retarded young adults who were training at vocational training facility located in Daejon city, and divided them into 10 experimental and 10 control groups .Occupational activity program for hand function developed by a researcher, were applied for 16 hours, 1 hour each day from January 26th to February 23rd of 2005. For measuring the differences of hand function and occupational performance ability, pre- post test of Purdue Pegboad, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, Box & Block Test and Valpar work sample series were administered. Test result indicated that the experimental group exhibited significantly greater differences than those in the control group, on hand function of the Purdue Pegboard, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test and Box & Block Test, and occupational performance ability of Valpar work sample series(fine finger dexterity and simulated assembly). This study shows that occupational activity program for hand function affects hand function and occupational performance ability of mentally retarded young adults. It was concluded that occupational activity program for hand function can be applied to promote vocational training.
